Attending your first yoga class can be intimidating... at balance yoga lounge in Ankeny we believe yoga is for EVERY body! Initiating a yoga practice will be easier if you understand the culture. Here are some tips to ensure you have a great experience at the yoga lounge. 

bring your own mat

Most students prefer an exclusive relationship with their yoga mat. Consider purchasing a partially bio-degradable mat for the continued health of the planet. Our prop shelves are filled with blocks, blankets, straps, meditation cushions and of course, extra yoga mats for you to borrow.

arrive on time

Getting to the lounge early can help you settle in and align your attitude with the purpose of the class. While you are waiting, you can stretch, breathe or just sit quietly and get centered. Plan to practice on an empty stomach. Digesting food takes energy away from skeletal muscles and can leave you sluggish during class. Forward bends, inversions and twisting postures can be uncomfortable with a full stomach.


Silence all electronic devices and leave them in the entry-space to provide a distraction free environment for all.


Speak quietly. It's great to share a class with people you know, but loud conversation can be distracting.

honor your body

Rather than trying to go as deep into a pose as others; attempt what you can without straining or injuring yourself. You'll go faster and farther if you take a loving attitude toward yourself and work from where you are, not from where you think you should be. Yoga is more about feeling than forcing. It is better to allow your body to open slowly than to push too far, too quickly. Be patient with your practice.

honor the group

Always feel free to make modifications during class to honor your body and avoid injury. But, please follow the group as best you can so we can all feed off the combined effort. Let your instructor know about injuries or conditions that might affect your practice.

Getting to know your body and taking control of your practice takes a while. When the instructor looks at you, and sees your effort, she is smiling because she thinks you are awesome!

It gets easier. Soon you will know the names of the poses and get into them faster. The word "flow" will make sense to you and your transition from pose to pose will feel smoother
and more natural.

You will begin to reap the benefits of your practice, and this will bring a more positive attitude, strength and peace to your life.
