Bread baking…a quiet meditation

September 4, 2009 · Filed Under Living Yoga · Comment

Back again this fall- our popular breadbaking as meditation workshop.

Noodle Zoo will share their kitchen Zen Sept 28 at 7pm. The workshop will begin with hands on mixing and kneading of dough and then proceed to relaxing yoga stretches and meditation while the loaves rise. After baking, we will break bread together and spend time reflecting on the transformative process of creating bread and the possible parallels to life itself.

Baking not only demands concentration and presence but also offers a bit of sanctuary. The process of making bread creates a shift in awareness, becoming absorbed- not thinking of yesterday or tomorrow- but giving your attention to the bread, focusing on the dough in your hands.

Show us your Energy Mudra!!!

July 4, 2009 · Filed Under Asana and Breath Review, Living Yoga · Comment

We encounter many familiar faces as we live, work and play in Central Iowa. Dropping off the kids at school, shopping at HyVee or ordering lunch at Noodle Zoo. There they are; faces we recognize from our community- we might smile, or wave- or spend a few moments trying to remember how we know them….The next time you see a familiar face from yoga class, share the energy mudra!

When you see balance yoga lounge in the Summerfest Parade- hold your energy mudra high!

Place the thumb, middle finger and ring finger together- extend the index and pinky finger. The Apan Mudra has a balancing effect on the mind and gives us patience, serenity, confidence, inner balance, and harmony. In the mental realm, it creates the ability to develop vision. You need all of this when you look into the future, while facing new challenges, and if your wishes are to be fulfilled.

Try using this energy mudra while you are stuck in traffic or waiting in line to calm and re-focus.

What do your actions reveal about you?

Speeding down the freeway earlier this week; behind a car that was making the most of both lanes- I started thinking…what kind of person drives like this? After making a conscious decision to stay well behind this unpredictable vehicle, my mind slowed down long enough to start contemplating what might be going on inside the car in front of me. There were no visible signs of distress, and the driver was not holding a cell phone to ear.
