What did you eat today?

I love to ask this question at the various trainings and workshops I provide around the nation because it can be a real eye opener. Answers generally run the gamut from doughnuts, broccoli, bread, salads, steak, fries, etc. Where am I going with this?
Take a look at the food pyramid from Integrative Nutrition. Notice the primary foods in red forming a circle and the secondary foods aligning in a pyramid shape in the middle. Primary food is more than nutrition on your plate. Healthy relationships, a regular exercise program, a satisfying career, and spiritual practice. Think back to a time when you were a child outside having fun. Your parents call you to dinner, but you aren’t hungry because your soul is so satisfied with the joy of play. Sometimes it’s not ordinary food feeding us, but the energy in our lives. Deep within our souls we have a desire for romance, play, love, success, art, adventure and a connection with our Maker. The more we incorporate these elements into our daily lives the more purposeful and full our lives feel. Combining primary food with high quality secondary food is the key to health and happiness.
So let me ask the question again….what did you eat today? Does your answer look different? Do you need to add more primary food into your life? Which ones?
